It was a HUD home in less than show worthy state. The previous owner was a drug dealer and for the last month or so of his life in this house, he did not pay his bills. So he bbq-ed in the front yard and the house was disgusting from top to bottom. Yay! I painted all the walls, ceilings, and kitchen cabinets before we moved in. I will be the first to admit that I did not do a professional job. I just know it smelled much better in the house after painting. I am still, 2 + years later, painting the trim in the house. I lack 2 bedrooms and the hall. Today I tackled the trim in my bathroom. I also tackled a super nasty thing that has bothered me no end since we moved in: cigarette burns on the bathroom countertop. I hate them. It was a gross reminder of what had gone on in this home before we bought it. I had bleached them, scrubbed them with vinegar, and anything else I could think of. Nothing worked. I finally got the brilliant idea to check YouTube. Voila! I watched several and deduced what I could try. So here are my before and after pics:
Here is my after! Yay, clean!! The videos I had watched recommended steel wool and scrubbing powder (like Comet). As you can see in my second photo, I just used an SOS pot scrubber. They are steel wool and have a heavy duty cleaner built into them. It took a bit of elbow grease, but every single spot came off. That includes one in my shower. (don't ask me how they did that). I am a happy camper, but my arms are about to fall off from painting and scrubbing. Well, I just thought I would share this small victory with whomever shall read this.annhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07908949657224116746noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3918229133864830132.post-52536917756352798432015-05-13T10:41:00.000-07:002015-05-13T10:41:11.617-07:00Book newsHi! I am so excited that my book is available for purchase on Amazon.com. I thought I would tell a little about my writing in this post. Most of my friends know I've led an unusual life. I was born a navy brat in Rhode Island, of all places! We lived in Puerto Rico when I was a small child and many, many other places as I grew up. This includes Texas, Missouri, a brief 2 months in Guatemala, and Bolivia. I have encountered so many amazing people and experiences in my life so far. In 1998 I went to live with my aunt and uncle while I attended Dallas Baptist University for a year. I have my aunt to thank for introducing me to the whole world of Jane Austen. I was immediately hooked and wanted to watch the 6 hour version of Pride and Prejudice over and over. I read all of her books, several times, and sought out every version of each of the movies based on her books. (I draw the line at 90s interpretations). Well, back to writing. I am really not talented in many areas, but I love to write.
Several years ago, I wrote 2 novels based (very loosely) on things I had experienced. They are my way of turning on the creative and writer side of my brain. True, they are extremely fictional, but there is emotion in those stories that I needed to express. You can read both of those novels here on my blog in some of my early posts. They are fun, suspenseful stories that I still enjoy reading. In thinking of sequels, I discovered that it was really not the genre that I was passionate about. I am very passionate about Jane Austen. I am not a dress up fanatic, but there are principles that resonate with me. I love the fact that I feel content when I read her books. There is nothing dirty or disgusting to wash from your brain. Yes, there are scandals. However, what they called scandals and the scandals of today are quite different. I have these same elements in my books. I have another angle added to my stories; I am a Christian and I am not ashamed to express my faith in my books. Just because a story is "clean" does not make it Christian.
Without further delay, here is the link for the print version of my book Helen Redding. While the sale of this book will really help my family, I am publishing as a step of faith for myself. I am pursuing my dream of being an author. My sincere thanks to all who have encouraged me, read my books, helped me, and shared my posts. Thank you!
It's our 15th anniversary today. I love my bear hubby!!annhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07908949657224116746noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3918229133864830132.post-73751105550072528782015-05-04T14:25:00.000-07:002015-05-04T14:25:08.600-07:00New things and Old thingsHi friends! I'm back. I know, you didn't ask. Ok, I'm going to write about something old first, save the exciting stuff for later. Oh, the suspense! Just kidding.
Years and years ago, (sorry, just had to do that) my family lived on an organic produce farm in the foothills of the Ozarks in Missouri. My mom was always a huge believer in eating healthy and my brother and I were always subject to strange vitamins and supplements. (Dolomite comes to mind. Yuck!) Anyway, one of the health fads to pass through our farmhouse was Kombucha. At first I thought mom was making us swallow glasses of vinegar. After a while, though, I acquired a taste for it. Mom had quite the collection of Scobies (an extremely cute name for gross, slimy mushrooms). I knew at the time that I was bolstering my immune system with the strange tea, but not sure what else it was doing to me. Well, in 1996 we packed up our lives and moved to Bolivia as missionaries. We couldn't take the scoby with us (customs might frown upon a slimy mushroom in your suitcase) and thus, it was the end of our kombucha days.
Fast forward a lot! I have hypothyroidism and it tends to manifest in nasty cycles of tummy issues a couple of days a month. I had begun to buy the fancy bottles of kombucha from the local health store and it helped me immensely. Kombucha is absolutely loaded with probiotics. Your body needs all the crazy bacteria and fermentation that goes on in that glass jar. As the saying goes, sooner or later you become some sort of manifestation of your mother. Here I am making kombucha! Let me tell you how I did it.......First I made a scoby from a bottle of store bought fancy kombucha. I read this blog post. It not only told me how to grow a scoby from the store bought stuff, it also has the recipe for the regular stuff. Here is a picture of my scoby and the tea it is now basking in to make a big jar of kombucha.

The stuff under the scoby is so strong it will curl your nose hairs, but it's still good stuff. I'll just pretend I'm taking a shot. haha. Next, I plan on making some flavored fizzy kombucha like the fancy store stuff. Here is a link for that recipe.

Ok, moving on to new stuff. Most of my friends already know that I self-published my first novel. I'm currently writing my 5th novel in the Jane Austen genre. It took me more than 3 years to get up the courage to self publish. I have been rejected by more than 30 literary agents. That tends to affect a person. I know the stories of lots of extremely famous authors who were also rejected a multitude of times. It proves that the agents don't always know what they are talking about. However, that thought didn't comfort me. Well, I finally asked the Lord to give me courage to go for it. Yep, it's done. Whew. I'm waiting by my mailbox like a school girl for my final proof copy. I love to write!! I have always had a crazy imagination and would dream up entire stories in my mind. It took me just a couple of days write the one I just published. I had the whole thing in my head and I had to just sit at the computer until it was done. My kids have gotten used to giving me space while I am authoring. I love how my step of faith has encouraged them. Now my girls are writing their own books. I love how I can't get them to do creative writing for homeschool, but mom publishes a book and they will start writing up a storm. Ok, so I will post a picture of my book. I drew the cover art and Amazon didn't like it because it's blurry. That is how I wanted it, though. so there.

I will make a special blog post when it is ready for purchase on Amazon!annhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07908949657224116746noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3918229133864830132.post-51383848544913628492015-04-22T13:54:00.000-07:002015-04-22T13:54:03.325-07:00Thrifty remakeSo, before Easter I went to the Salvation Army thrift store close to me. (Usually even thrift stores are too expensive for me, but they have half price clothing on Wednesday.) I purchased dresses for myself and my three daughters. I posted the remakes I did on my daughters' dresses on Facebook, but didn't post mine because I wasn't happy with the fit even after alteration. So, today I tackled it and made a skirt I can love.

So here is my frumpy dress. It was about 4 sizes too big for me, but only 2.50 so I bought it. It originally had a floppy crepe fabric bow at the neck. I removed it and put a lace insert (to make it a little more modest). I put in a plethora of darts to take it in without having to completely disassemble the whole thing. I wore it on Easter with a nice cardigan and brown shoes. It was ok, but still felt like a Mumu dress. I still love the fabric! It's a cotton and linen blend. The pattern was a bit too busy for a dress, so I decided to chop it off and make a nice skirt. I love skirts and wear them all summer. So here is my final product!

Now that is a skirt I will wear with a brown t-shirt or yellow. Cute! So that is my remake for today. I had intended to do a skirt from a pair of jeans and a super cool jean skirt that I have outgrown. Alas, I am too efficient and had already donated the jeans to charity. Sometimes I am a little too organized!

Ok! Some big news! I just started the process today to self publish my first Jane Austen genre novel on Amazon! I will post as soon as it is made available!

Have a blessed day knowing that Jesus loves you!
In our 3anniemouse3 shop we sell eco friendly market totes and several things related to essential oil. When I first began sewing essential oil cases, there were not that many available. They were pretty on the outside, but made with elastic bands on the inside to hold the bottles. Not such a great idea as the elastic will degrade if it comes in contact with oil. I developed (through tons of trial and error) a design with fabric pockets that hold the bottle beautifully. My heart sank this week when I did a little search on Etsy for essential oil bags. Literally dozens of shops are now making this or a similar design. The kicker is they are charging less than I do. I have no idea how they can do that! Please tell me how to, well actually, I know. They are not charging for labor. Tis ever the dilemma with home made products. Anyway, I am now looking for new products to make so I can once again be unusual instead of usual.

Would you like to see pictures now instead of reading my rant? Why yes, of course! I think I will show you the bag I use for my oils first.
When we travel, I can carry all the oils I need, plus blends and the oils I have mixed with coconut oil in jars.

Ok, on to this weeks' projects!

Here is one of my new essential oil scarves. Lots of people like the essential oil necklaces for diffusing a scent close to you all day. I put a pocket with a special bead that can be saturated with oil. I think this turned out pretty cute. I also made two with cotton knit fabric.

Now to things for our Grapecake shop! I am always planning new Modest Barbie outfits in my head. This week I made a couple, plus a bedding set.
I like the jeans set because it is super easy to get on and off the doll. Great for smaller children! The white and black outfit is something I would wear!! So pretty. And of course, most girls love Paris, so I made a black and pink set complete with a cat bed.

So, I hope you enjoyed those pictures. The rest of the week will be playing catch up. I have two summer skirts with busted zippers. Oh joy. I really need them in my wardrobe, so they will be fixed. I'm also dreaming of making some more skirts. I'm a skirt kind of gal. I like to be comfy.

I think I'll go nurse my sore abs with some wintergreen oil. I started a rigorous pilates regimen yesterday. OW!
Surprised? I am back with some cheery pictures of my garden and a fabulous Pinterest success (for once). We live in South Texas and although I love gardening and have lots of experience, I find it so difficult to keep my garden alive down here. The summer heat zaps it like lightning and fries it before my eyes even as early as May. So for now, I am relishing the sight of my verdant garden and the sugar snap peas that I am harvesting.

I love Nasturtiums! They are so bright and happy. And edible! They fall victim to the heat every year, but in early spring they pop back up. I have gorgeous spearmint in early spring, also. I think this year I will build it a shade in an attempt to keep it longer. I have a self-propagated acorn squash, some cilantro, rosemary, sugar snap peas, German stripe tomato, small yellow pear tomato, and some really old periwinkles! I use rabbit, um, stuff to fertilize my garden, with an extra boost of Epsom salts every now and then. I am going to try to grow green beans as well. Ok, that is my garden. Sorry to all the folks up north who were hit with snow today......

On to Pinterest success! I absolutely hate pinning dozens of luscious looking recipes on my "recipes to try" board and have them turn out to be complete flops! Sometimes I think people who post recipes on their fancy blogs have done something different to the recipe to set us up for a fail. Probably not, but it makes me feel a little better to think that way. ha. Especially healthy recipes, don't get me started! Anyway, this one was NOT healthy! The recipe is found here. I whipped up fresh cream and slice some nice strawberries to top this lovely cake. I kept telling myself that this cake had lots of good fats in it, so it's ok to eat. hmm. It was a wonderful treat since I had company yesterday for lunch. I suppose lunch itself was a Pinterest success as well. I had searched for a good avocado chicken salad recipe and sort of frankensteined a few of them together. I can put that here if you are interested.
AVACADO CHICKEN SALAD
5 chicken tenderloin roasted and then cooled
1 large ripe avocado cubed
1 Tablespoon finely chopped onion
1 Tablespoon sour cream
1 Tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon sea salt
1 teaspoon herb seasoning
1 Tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro
Chop the chicken into small cubes and then dump everything into a bowl! Stir! I served the salad in hollowed out croissants on a platter. It was so yummy!!
Having recently been hooked on reading certain types of blogs, I've become eager to write on my own. I know, probably no one reads them, but I enjoy posting. First, I'll tell you about my reading curiosities. My hubby is a huge history buff and is constantly watching documentaries on WWII and such. I do admit to enjoying them as well, but I have also developed a love for all things 30s and 40s. Specifically, fashions and sewing styles. So, I have searched about on the blogosphere and found a few gems. My favorite by far is theboyerfamilysingersblog.com . These three sisters sing music from the 40s for special events. They also sew their own dresses for these events in period correct patterns and fabrics. My own daughters roll their eyes and sigh when I talk about the Boyer blog, but I get tickled when a new post comes to my inbox.
For those who follow me on facebook or have seen our Grapecake shop on Etsy, you know I have begun to sew 40s style dresses for Barbie. I had no patterns, so the whole process was so frustrating! I made three models without patterns. I will show them here:

This one is a skirt and blouse with a belt and pearl necklace

This one a dress with belt, bows at the shoulders, and a pearl necklace.

The last one is a dress with belt, tiny black buttons, and Minnie applique. I made the iconic ear beanie as well.

So finally, a local fabric shop had patterns on sale for 1.99. I stocked up on all their vintage patterns for doll dresses. I hope this will cut down on my stress level!
I am still sewing for my 3annimouse3 Etsy shop as well. I have been sewing more small size zippered pouches and trying to come up with new designs for my large pouches. Hand made scallop trim on the fronts of my bags take a lot of time. Time that I do not get paid for. The Etsy world is highly competitive and difficult to conquer.

I still love the whole process of being creative and blending fabrics, I just wish it paid better! I know my accountant hubby would love it if I charged a lot more for my creations, but the truth is ugly. People expect the same cost for handcrafted as store-bought. I suppose each person goes through the dilemma of supporting a family in Bangladesh or paying more to support a family here in the USA. Or not. Ah, here I step off of my soapbox.
On the book front, I am chicken. I admit it. Rejection by more than 30 literary agents has made me thus. I still consider daily the option of self publishing my 4 novels. Courage! Pray for that!
And here I stop rambling.
I am hoping if anyone reads this that they are blessed and encouraged. God's loving kindness was new and fresh this morning when you woke up!annhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07908949657224116746noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3918229133864830132.post-58028204055974878212014-06-10T09:44:00.001-07:002014-06-10T09:44:22.000-07:00Essential Oil Girl strikes againMy dear daughter, Emma, is my comic maker extraordinaire. She has always done comics instead of your standard creative writing. This morning she sat down and made a really good one! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
Another day saved by Essential Oils Girl!! We have had this real experience in our family. My youngest had a lot of warts on her feet and they are all gone now!
The moment I think my life could not possibly get any more busy....Bam! I have been trying so hard to make my Etsy shop viable, I was sewing like a drag racer! I struggled through trying to please people and wanting to just express my own creativity. Ug!! I get so upset when I read magazines and crappy pillowcases are 80 dollars, but people won't buy hand-crafted, quilted and embellished bags for much less from me. Deep breath! I've decided my Etsy shop is a lovely hobby. I do not wish to beg and whine and plead for customers. If it is supposed to be, it will be. Kudos to those who have done so much to help me!
On a happy note! Last weekend was my oldest daughter's 13th birthday. I have a teenager! She had been wanting the doll pictured above for quite a long time and didn't know that I had snatched her up in a fantastic sale. She started to have an idea when I made the Maddie Hatter bedding and bed the day before her birthday. I love the top hat and tea cup. (this doll is supposed to be the daughter of the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland). I made a crazy quilt and even made the polka dot fabric to match her tights! I painted dots on white fabric with a pencil eraser. Anyway, daughter was very happy!

So in praying through all of my troubles from the first paragraph, God came through and I got a job! I am the new Education Coordinator for the local Jo Ann's store! Yay! I get to craft and sew and get paid for it! Sew excited! (I know, sorry)

Next, my dear daughters wanted to open an Etsy shop with doll clothes and accessories. My oldest has just figured out she loves to make doll clothes. It's her own creative outlet. So we all got busy and created some awesome things! I am so proud of my girls for heeding my scrutiny and doing things well. Here are some of our things.

So we had lots of fun sewing and photographing, as you can see! The girls new shop is grapecake.etsy.com .
Finally, we are saying goodbye, hopefully, to our baby bunnies this weekend. The time has come to sell them. So I'll post one last cute photo!
Oh, thank you for asking! I had sew many projects on my plate. ( did you catch the pun?) Ok, I will probably stop being silly now, or not. Anyway, I wanted to post some of my fun projects that I completed last week. Ready. go!

These are not in order, but oh well! This first pic is a gift I made for a graduating senior, who is on her way to Baylor. I just had to whip up a tote bag for her new adventure (in Baylor colors).

My middle daughter is growing like a weed and loves her "hippy" pants. They were just too short, but she didn't want to get rid of them. We had seen some jeans on Pinterest that had eyelet lace inserted like this and loved it. I made the lace insert and then added more denim to the bottom. She will get a couple more months out of them! haha.

I think I must have blinked. Where did spring go??? It is already in the 90s here and our little bunnies are suffering! We jumped straight from nice and cool to blazing hot. Welcome to South Texas! Although I would wish for a real spring, I will not complain. We did not have the never ending winter here, and that is why I love living here.

Next, I altered a fancy smancy gown for a friend. That was the first time I had ever used a tiny rolled hem foot on my sewing machine. I must give a shout out to my two younger daughters who rubbed my shoulders and patted my head while I yelled at the machine. I watched multiple tutorials on how to use the rolled hem foot and most of them were not helpful. Only one helped me.....for future reference; you need to kind of have the fabric rolled in a nice tube before it gets to the foot for a nice, smooth outcome.

And I have to throw in a picture of adorable bunnies here. I think the little brown ones look like cow hide. I know that is tremendously uncute, but there it is. All 14 babies are growing quickly and can now jump in and out of their nesting box. (Their mothers do not appreciate this).

And my last baking exploration: Low carb, sugar free peanut butter cookies.
My dear hubby tries to avoid sugar in any way, shape, or form, so chocolate chips are out. We also do not eat anything with synthetic sweeteners. So, I tweaked my fabulous low carb and mostly sugar free chocolate chip cookie recipe. The result was a nice cocoa peanut butter cookie worthy of a large glass of milk. Hubby can't stop eating them, so I guess they are a hit. Want my recipe?

Chocolate Peanut Butter Cookies (Low carb and sugar free)
1 stick of softened unsalted butter
1/2 cup coconut sugar
1/2 cup stevia
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 large eggs
1 cup hazelnut flour (you can sub almond flour if that is your choice)
1 1/4 cup garbanzo bean flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

Stir it all together and bake rounded tablespoon size balls on a cookie sheet for 9 minutes at 350 degrees. (I did the old fashioned criss cross pattern with a fork on mine and hubby was duly impressed).

Hi! Have you been scrolling through the DIY page on Pinterest and seen all those pins for homemade house hold cleaners? You thought to yourself, "OH, that is so cool! I should try that some time!" You repin all those ideas and months later they still sit on your "For the Home" board. Ok, maybe that is just me. I have this romantic idea of making all my own cleaners, to save money, but have never actually gotten around to it. Well, today I am one step closer! I made my own nifty recipe chart to hang in my laundry area! Nifty, right? Ok, so I need to use up all of my icky, harsh store bought cleaners before I can actually start using these. But hey, I feel accomplished just sorting through all those pins for the recipes that will help me. Here is my chart!

So cool!! If I do say so myself. I can't wait to start using these. The great part is that I have all of these ingredients in my home!! (except for the castile soap. not a regular in my house.)

Anyway, I thought I would share these with all 2 or 3 people who read my blog. I will update when I have tried these out! FIY, if you want to print my chart you can right click on it and save to your computer.

Today was our 100th day of school, here at Withers Private Academy. We had grandiose plans of cake making, pizza partying, and crafting. However, as a cloud of lazy settled over the house I seemed to only fulfill the latter. We had homemade milkshakes for dinner (so healthy, right?), which we could do since hubby is away for his drill weekend as a chaplain.

Anyway, I always find that our dolls are sadly lacking in the accessories department. I mean, what Barbie is seen without a fabulous purse or necklace? Well, I am the official purse and necklace maker in our house, so I decided to put a few together tonight. I didn't photograph the necklaces because they sold off the shelf faster than I could get the camera. (they actually just got put on dolls as soon as the hot glue was dry.) Enough jabber, I'll show you the pictures and tell you how I did them.

Here are 3 of the bags I made this evening. Yep, they are all made from paper. I got this idea from My Froggy Stuff, once again. This time I had the where-with-all to make myself a cardboard pattern to avoid the tedious measuring and drawing every time I want to make some purses. The one on the left really buttons over a bead. I used some pink chain that I had for the strap. The middle one is open at the top and has ribbon handles. The last one closes with a flap tucked into a strap and has a bent paper clip handle. I love experimenting with different papers to see how they will look.

So! Or, shall I say, Sew! I have been working on some new things for my shop and also some special requests. One request was for an Easter table runner. I was browsing Pinterest and came across a blogger who made the cutest things. I went to her blog and found the perfect idea for a spring table runner: bunnies!

This is her version. A bunny quilt wallhanging. She has a Sizzix machine to cut out her bunnies once they are bonded to a light fusible backing. I don't have that, so I just took one of her pictures and enlarged the bunny. I cut it out and glued it to light weight cardboard. Then I fused some springy fabrics to Heat-n-Bond backing, traced the bunny, and cut them out by hand. I made the horrible mistake of using the heavy backing instead of light, so I had to clean my needle every few inches when I was appliqueing by machine. I used a whole bunch of scrap pieces for my border. It turned out really cute, but was so much work since I used the wrong backing! Read the package first!!

Hi! So I wanted to post the final pictures of the doll house. We ended up finishing it and moving it into her bedroom last weekend. She was really anxious to have it done and start playing with it. Here we go:

This is the office. Not much to it. We were going modern, after all. I made her "acrylic" desk out of some doll packaging plastic and wooden dowels. So the second floor of the doll house is pretty well finished. Let me post the pictures and then tell you about what I have done:

Here is the master bedroom. Ellie wanted a modern platform bed. I stacked 5 equal pieces of cardboard and covered them with wood contact paper. I made a mattress and a bedspread out of a thick white cotton fabric. I made a lot of pillows! The wall mounted night stands are two more of those blingy dollar store combs. I glued a rolled up piece of paper that is painted silver to a glue stick cap for the lamp. My Froggy Stuff on YouTube has tutorials on mattresses and the folded paper shopping bag. Lastly, I made two doors from cardboard, contact paper, and beads for the extensive (imaginary) walk in closet.

The bathroom is one of our favorites! Let's start with the tub. Barbie tubs cost in the neighborhood of WAY TOO MUCH! I found large Easter eggs at the dollar store and painted the lower half (which happens to have a flat bottom). My modern faucet is made from another dollar store comb with hot glue dripping off for the water. The sink is made from two different dollar store candle holders glued together. I made the faucet from a picture hanger and two beads. The mirror is an old scratched dvd and the fancy pendant light is from a broken necklace. The trash can was Ellie's work. She painted the lid to a hair spray can. And everybody knows that Barbie does not use the toilet since she is plastic. Also, if you've looked online like I have, you know there are no easy ways of making a nice looking toilet from recycled materials!

Just one floor left! Ellie decorated the roof of the house, which I will show in another post. We are excited to be near the end of this project! I hope these posts are inspiring some crafty mom out there. My smart daughter was figuring out last night that this whole project will cost me under 40 dollars, whereas a store bought house and all the furniture will run over 100 dollars. I love a bargain!

Hi! So I survived the first floor of the doll house! Wow! I have a few glue gun burns and scissor cuts to show for it. How about a tour?

So this is the modern kitchen and living room. Everything in the kitchen is made from cardboard. Some of it is covered in wood print contact paper and the rest is covered in scrapbook paper. I used a baby food container for the kitchen sink after painting it white. The top of a kid's hanger and two clear beads make the faucet. The rug idea came from here:

I made pillows with beads in the center. I can't find the right tutorial for these, but if you look up My Froggy Stuff on YouTube, she has loads of tutorials.

My super chic coffee table is made from a nut can covered in shiny scrapbook paper. I glued a scratched up DVD mirror side up on top. My modern art bouquet is made from a glue stick lid, toothpicks, and crystal beads. Peeking from the side is my printed-from-online tv. Both chandeliers are Christmas ornaments I picked up at a rummage sale.

Wow! I am just too busy! I keep wanting to do the final touch ups on Ellie's room, but every moment of my day is taken up with homeschooling, housework, sewing, and a few minutes on the doll house. I am happy with my life. Alright, on to details, right?

This week I papered the walls of the doll house with various scrapbook papers. (A great money saver there is to look at Big Lots in their stationary section. They get closeout stacks for 5 dollars or less.) I get most of my paper for projects like this at Big Lots.

I also had Ellie take a photo of the doll who will be occupying this house. (In case you are wondering this doll happens to be a bit self absorbed. She is a lesson to the other dolls on how NOT to behave.) Anyway, we did the photo in a paint program on the tablet so it looks like a portrait. I glued it to cardboard and put painted popsicle sticks around the edges for a frame. The giant peacock feather is just a piece of scrapbook paper trimmed.

Now, back to the plans for my daughter.....Ellie is turning the big 1-3 this May and I am undertaking some huge projects for her delight. #1 Was to repaint her bedroom. It is now a lovely gray. I still need to make a cover for her comforter with its huge hot pink and lime green flowers. I've decided to go the duvet route. (didn't that line look so fancy?) My hugest (I know, not fancy) project is to create a new doll house for her using a bookshelf. I have pinned a dozen ideas on my "doll stuff" board on Pinterest. I suppose that will count as homework. haha. My girl loves her dolls, but she wants her doll to have a modern house. Quartz counter tops, stainless steel appliances....the whole nine yards. Now, I am a French country, provincial, romantic, rosey type. Modern is not in my vocabulary. This will be a stretching experience. I've begun by buying this bookshelf from Target that has lovely dark hardwood floors already... ha.

I have stocked up on metallic paints and scrapbook paper. I dream about modern doll furniture at night. This is going to be bad. In the mean time, I have lots of sewing to do!! She is going bonkers because I won't tell her what I am planning. It is for her birthday after all! More updates to come!

At the time we thought it would awesome to have a bright pink and green room to match a bargain comforter we had bought. It was not awesome. It gave you a headache. Now that she is "so mature" I decided to paint her room a calm gray. (Mostly because I had a can of cheap white paint, a small remnant of white good paint, and a tube of black acrylic paint) See how resourceful (cheap) I am? Anyway, I am now finishing the trim in the room. I have been slowly (did I mention slowly?) painting all the trim in the house over this year. Let me tell you, there is a gob! It has been so stinkin' hard to cover that green!!! But I am triumphing! Up next is removing her mirror closet doors and building a massive doll house in the bottom half of her closet. I will post updating photos.

In other news! My National Guard chaplain continues his very important ministry and works a less than stellar job to care for us. I pray God will bless him mightily for all he does for his family!
I have re-opened my etsy shop: 3anniemouse3.etsy.com . We need the extra income! Unfortunately, although everyone says my stuff is so cute, no one is buying. AAAAAck! Breathing, trusting in God. Blessings, friends!
Was thinking last night that I must post in my much neglected blog. I have devoted most every minute of computer time to the drafting of my Jane Austen genre novels. I'm on the third one! Yeah, I still do not have an agent or publisher. Why do they have to make it so difficult? When I see the number of strange, boring, and downright dumb books that get published every year, it disheartens me that I cannot find a publisher for mine. Deep breath.

Ok, so I can't believe it's November!!! I am once again a single mom since hubby is away for 7 weeks of chaplain training in South Carolina. Oh, and I am finally a soccer mom. My two oldest are 12 and 10 and they are on their very first soccer team. The navy base here has a small league. They love it! My delicate girlie girls are learning what aggressive means. haha! One of our bunnies had babies a week ago. Yay! More fun to worry about.

I gave up on sewing for profit. Not going to happen. I want to help out with our severely strapped finances. It seems, though, that every time I do, my efforts are doomed. Praying for a solution!

Well, back to November. I get a kick out of all the folks who get a hankering to become thankful for the month. I am convicted that I am not thankful enough all the other months. (see previous paragraph). Perhaps if I am grateful in June, I won't feel as though my life is in constant want in November. I was thinking over choices I made before I was married before I got out of bed this morning. What ifs are dangerous critters. It all boils down to the message of the Old Testament. God had a purpose and a plan from the very beginning. Every single crazy and even bizarre event that took place was part of a greater plan, like dominoes lined up in seemingly unrelated rows. In the end, the dominoes lead us to Christ and His sacrifice for us. It makes all of the weirdness in our own lives point to God's greater purpose for us.

ok, done preaching.

Well, I do hope you all have a fabulous Thanksgiving season!
Wait, does anybody read this, or am I just doing this for myself. Oh well. Life has been so very busy this summer. My dear has been away a total of 8 weeks this summer in training and drills for the National Guard. I am so grateful that he is not deployed for months at a time, but still we have not been apart so much in the entire history of our marriage. My utmost respect and applause for all the women in the US who are alone today, worrying about the future of their loved ones.
I have used this time to work on house projects. Some painting, grouting, and deep cleaning have worked on my muscles. I have read way too many novels! Haha! I have watched Jane Austen movies even though I practically have them memorized. They drive my hubby crazy because of the highly predictable outcomes. So, in his absence I can watch them and smile my stupid smile as Darcy gives his amazing romantic stare. I am after all a writer, or wish to be one. Which brings me to my new project. I love stories from the mid to late 1800s England. Thus, I've decided to write stories from that epoch. I have my first book outlined already. Still hoping and praying for a publisher, but if not, my stories will be for me and my friends. I still haven't finished my third book in the Pseumish series. I hit a creative block. Perhaps it just won't be as long as the others. I don't know. I tend to jump from one project to another in every area of my life. However, I am not one of those people who start a hundred things and never complete any of them. I do finish things. I suppose the creative and the orderly side of me have a delicate balancing act.
Hope you have had a wonderful summer. I know some people have been through tough times. As our pastor said this morning, "Make your life about Jesus and you won't have to worry about your life."annhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07908949657224116746noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3918229133864830132.post-62940727825991462822013-04-27T17:40:00.000-07:002013-04-27T17:40:09.773-07:00tablets and frustration and recipes, oh my!Hi friends! I know, it's been forever since I have posted here. The truth is......perhaps you should sit down.....1.I was given a tablet, and as much as I absolutely love it for checking on people all day and for use in homeschooling, I can't do blog posts on it....yet. (still figuring it out). 2. We purchased, in my dear hubby's words, a crappy house, and it has needed a LOT of TLC. I painted the entire interior of the house by myself. I cleaned by myself. I worked on flower beds and yard by myself. In other words.... so exhaustingly busy. ( I actually just invented a word!) Add to that, said dear hubby changed jobs, became a first lieutenant chaplain in the Texas Army National guard, and came home one day with a completely new diet! May I just take a moment to breathe? I'm getting tired all over again just writing this stuff. Oh, and let's not forget that we went to Bolivia the last week in January! That was glorious, but sent my poor body for a loop afterward.

I am loving my new (crappy) house and my girls are happy, too. You see, we had been crammed into a 2 bedroom townhouse with no yard for 3 years. It was a good place and served its purpose in our lives, but it was time to stretch a bit. We now have 3 bedrooms and more space. My 2 youngest girls still share a room, but I have it divided with one of those magnificent Expedit shelves from Ikea. So, they think they have their own rooms, and we have peace among the Mohicans. I have torn apart the kitchen and put it back the way I like it. It's very French country......by necessity. The cabinet doors were all formica on particle board. They were all swollen with grease, and moisture, and I don't want to know what else, so I removed them and painted the cabinets. I hung curtains in front of the lower cabinets, so that I am at least allowed a little bit of disorganization! Those who have seen the pictures know that I picked a dark yellow for most of my house. It is a happy color, but also it reminds me of Bolivia. That makes me even happier to be reminded of our other home.

On to the diet. We've recently done a lot of study (mostly hubby) on the ketogenic diet. Basically it is high fat/no carb. Ah, although we already had a really healthy diet, we still ate a lot of carbs. I had no idea how many until we cut them out. I've planned so many meals saying, "Oh we could have some rice, no that's carbs. Or we could have some potatoes, no that's carbs...." And on and on I go until I find an acceptable substitute for carbs. Oh my goodness, this has been so tough! Can I say, though, for the first time since having 3 babies I am losing weight. Yay! (Of course it could be from working myself to the bone on this house..) heehee. So anyway, my creative juices have kicked in and I am working on recipes for our new diet that will agree with the taste buds and also be healthy. Can I tell you I am missing chocolate cake for some odd reason? Ok, enter my new Nutella cookie dough cheesecake! Cheesecake is an excellent recipe for no carb and no sugar eaters! With this recipe you also get my low carb sugar free cookie recipe, too. A twofer!

Cookies!
1 stick of butter softened (it really is good for you folks)
1-1 1/4 cups xylitol or stevia (they are even better with a drop of molasses or something dark and sticky)
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
Mix those together until nice and smooth
1 cup almond meal
1 1/4 cup garbanzo bean flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
Mix again and add some chocolate chips that you like. If you are just making cookies, drop by teaspoon on a cookie sheet and bake for 10 minutes at 350*
If you are making the cheesecake, you need to add some Nutella (or a low sugar/no sugar kind) to the cookie dough batter and set some aside.
Cheesecake!
Crust
1 1/2 cups almond meal
1/4 cup xylitol
1/2 stick of butter melted
Mix that together and press into your cheesecake pan
Filling
3 packages of cream cheese softened
3 eggs
1 cup stevia (I use the Stevia in the Raw kind that is cup for cup the same as sugar)
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup sour cream
Mix together until smooth and pour over crust. Put little drops of cookie dough on top and smoosh them into the cheesecake batter. Bake at 325* for 50 minutes. Since it's a cheesecake, it has to jiggle on top when you check it. Bon Apetite!
I hope everyone is looking forward to a wonderful holiday week! I know I am! Calories? What are those??? I have no idea!! heehee! I can say that for one day, right? Today my daughter says to me, "Mom, you always make way too much food on Thanksgiving." You bet your booties, I do!! That, my dear, is the idea! I must confess that my kids abhor dressing (stuffing), but I make it anyway because I love it. I'm not sure what else I'm going to make this year. I suppose I should decide soon. ha. Anyway, I wish you all a wonderful holiday and many happy triptofan induced dreams! Yay!
For those who regularly read my blog (I'm assuming anybody reads it!), you know I've written and posted 2 novels here. BOOK 3 IS NOW GOING AGAIN! I had an acute case of writer's block in the penning (or typing) of my 3rd sequel. However, today during my Sunday nap I was struck with inspiration. I could not jump out of bed and unload my ideas immediately, since my hubby was studying for his certified fraud examiner's exam. (doesn't that sound so fun? yawning here). So, this evening I finally sat down and my inspiration made it to my fingers! This does not mean that book 3 will be published tomorrow! No way!! But I give you the hope that it will be on the horizon soon. I will need to send the rough draft to my professional editor ( my lovely mother), along with a lot of proof reading for myself. (Oh my goodness that line makes no sense!!! and that sort of thing). If you haven't read my novels, you can catch up by clicking on the links on the right. Any publishers out there....hey I'd love to hear from you!
Blessings to all and happy holidays! Be thankful!annhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07908949657224116746noreply@blogger.com0
